The Village Next to Paradise

Im windigen Dorf «Paradies» trotzt eine kleine Patchworkfamilie den Herausforderungen des Alltags. Der Vater lebt von Gelegenheitsjobs, während seine frisch geschiedene Schwester von einer eigenen Schneiderei träumt. Als der kleine Cigaal eines Tages vor der geschlossenen Schule steht, werden die beiden erfinderisch, um ihm dennoch eine gute Bildung zu ermöglichen. Kein leichtes Unterfangen im instabilen Somalia, doch die familiären Bande festigen sich. Die Erzählung entfaltet mit visueller Kraft und schalkhafter Note ein authentisches Bild vom Leben am Horn von Afrika. Mit guten Gründen wurde der Film in Cannes für seinen poetischen Realismus gefeiert.
