Santosh ist gerade einmal 28 Jahre, als ihr Mann bei einem Aufruhr ums Leben kommt. Durch ein Programm der indischen Regierung wird ihr sein Posten bei der Provinzpolizei vererbt. Die erfahrene Polizistin Sharma nimmt sie unter ihre Fittiche und gemeinsam beginnen sie, im Mordfall eines Mädchens aus einer unteren Kaste zu ermitteln. Santosh wird dabei mit der brutalen Realität patriarchaler Machtstrukturen konfrontiert, in der Korruption und Willkür, aber auch das angstvolle Schweigen der Opferfamilien an der Tagesordnung sind. Der Film ist Grossbritanniens Oscarnomination 2025.
