Marlon Brando zum 100. Geburtstag - Der junge Hafenarbeiter Terry Malloy gerät in den Docks von New Jersey an einen korrupten Gewerkschaftsführer, der bereits seine Boxerkarriere mit einem getürkten Kampf ruiniert hat. Unter dem Einfluss seiner neuen Freundin und eines sozial engagierten Priesters entzieht sich Malloy zunehmend dem korrupten Milieu, zu dem auch sein eigener Bruder gehört. Nachdem der Bruder seiner Freundin Opfer des kriminellen Clanwesens geworden ist, wagt Malloy die offene Konfrontation.
