Als Minato sich zu Hause immer merkwürdiger verhält, beschliesst seine Mutter, die Lehrkräfte der Schule zur Rede zu stellen. Auf den ersten Blick deutet alles darauf hin, dass sein Lehrer für Minatos Verhalten und Probleme verantwortlich ist. Doch durch jede neue Wahrnehmung, die wir durch die Erzählperspektive der Mutter, des Lehrers und Minato erfahren, präsentiert sich die Wahrheit komplexer und überraschender. Hirokazu Kore-eda hat seinen jüngsten Film wieder in der japanischen Heimat gedreht nach den Abstechern nach Frankreich und Südkorea.
